Power Line Carrier(PLC) Modem and Automatic Meter Reading (AMR)
Frequently Asked Questions

¡¡

In this list the following questions will be answered:

What is the supply voltage for PLC101?

Two models are available, PLC101-5 uses +5v and PLC101-12 requires +12v; you may choose the type convenient to you.

Do I need a coupling transformer to connect to the AC power line?

No, the coupling device is built on board and all you need to do is connect the live and neutral wires to the AC input terminal.

Do I need any special communication protocol?

No, PLC101s is independent of and transparent to any communication protocol. You can your existing communication software as long as it can support a standard serial interface.

How do I connect PLC101 to a RS-232C serial port?

PLC101 uses TTL levels; you may need to use an interface circuit to convert TTL levels to +12v levels used by the RS-232C.

What is the maximum baud rate that I can use?

For maximum communication distance and reliability, the communication speed of PLC101 is set at 600 bps. For a specific application where higher speed is needed, please contact us.

How do I know that PLC101 is working?

There are indicators on board, showing +supply voltage, Receive and Transmit Carriers, (RXC and TXC).

How many PCL101 can I connect together?

You can connect as many as you want as PLC101 is protocol independent. Address decoding of your data devices will be handled by your communication software.

What is the maximum communication distance of PLC101?

PLC101 is designed to transmit signals for a distance over 500m but since the communication distance depends on a number of factors, such as characteristics of the power line cable, loading and noise, the actual communication distance may vary.

Can PLC101 pass through distribution transformers?

No, the distribution transformer is a great barrier and the communication signals will not pass through.

Can I use the PLC101 on medium or high voltage lines?

No, the PLC101 is designed to transmit data over the power cable at the low voltage end of the power transformer of a 3-phase/ 4 wire distribution network. The AC mains voltage should not exceed 250v.

Can I connect any other Power Line Carrier devices to PLC101?

Yes, PLC101 will not interfere with your existing PLC devices.

Can I connect PLC101 between phase lines of a 3-phase distribution system?

No, PLC101 must be connected between phase and neutral. For 3-phase distribution systems, you may use PLC103, but a neutral line is always required.

Can I change the settings on the PLC101?

The settings for serial communications are pre-set as 8 data bits, 1 start and 1 stop bit. If you have special requirements, please contact us.
